Civil Monuments in Calpe

Los Baños de la Reina (the Queen’s Baths)
. This rectangular enclosure is divided into six compartments by a long wall and two more that cross it. It also has four channels which brought in the water; two of them are separated by a triangular breakwater. Next to the entrances of the channels are grooves from the gates or slats that closed off the area. All the work is carved from "tosca" stone. Although the name "the Queen’s Baths" gives the impression of a ancient spa, from the local legend of a Moor Queen, in reality it is an old fish farm directly connected to the sea. Various species of fish were farmed in the different compartments for later consumption by the villagers - there are remains of a settlement in a nearby excavation. The ruins date from the late Roman period (4th and 5th century AD).

Castle-Fortress. Overlooking the Mascarat ravine are the ruins of the Moorish Castle of Calpe. There are also the remains of the watch tower built at the end of the 16th century to warn of Berber pirate attacks. There is one wall left standing today where you can see the arrow slits and part of the defensive wall of the access route. The base of the tower in also intact. The castle was rebuilt using materials from the old castle. Remains of the base of the walls and the cisterns dug into the rock can still be seen.

Peça Tower. Defensive watch tower where the "peça" was installed, a piece of artillery that defended the Christian town from the 15th century onwards. Today, next to the tower, we can see two English-made cannons that were taken from the port of Calpe and which date from the beginning of the 14th century. The tower base is truncated, while the upper section is cylindrical.

Castellet Tower.

Casa Nueva (new house). Traditional fortified country house, of historical and architectural interest, where living and working quarters were totally integrated (the hearth, stores, yard and stables). Probably built in the late 17th century or the early 18th, the building is a spectacular landmark that dominates a large part of the municipality. The main building is solid and rectangular in shape. It is a covered three storey building with the end hollows of the first floor becoming flat railed balconies. At the back of the building there are two patios: one is exterior and the other interior and divides the living quarters from the working area. Traditional materials are used, and particularly irregular stones bound with a type of cement. Don’t miss the stone eaves and the machicolation over the access hole on the façade.

Pou Salat. Rural construction from the 18th century from which the villagers would draw water. It also served as a trough until 1878 when a pipe was connected from Pou Roig to Calpe.

Molí Tower or Morelló Windmill. Typical flour mill of the Navy that was built on the remains of a watch tower built in the time of Felipe II to protect the coast from pirate invasions. Built in the mid 19th century with stone masonry walls, it has two floors, a circular base and is 7 metres high.
