Religious monuments in Calpe

San Salvador Hermitage. Dominating the bay from its hilltop location, in an area of great natural beauty, the San Salvador Hermitage owes its name to the 6 of August, the day of the Transformation of Saint Salvador, the day of the recovery of Calpe by King Jaime I. A Gothic style hermitage, the building is rectangular in shape. Its arched doorway faces north. Inside it is divided into three sections by pointed arches that rest on stone pillars built into the exterior walls. The first building dates from the 18th century. In 1748 a new building was built on the site which was rebuilt in 1945 and again in 1992.

La Cometa Hermitage. Located on the outskirts of the town, in Tossal de la Cometa, it is an historically interesting set of religious buildings, featuring an ancient fortified farmhouse built at the end of the 17th century or early 18thcentury.

Parish Church. Dedicated to Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, it is located in the heart of the old quarter, built in 1973-75 with modern, solid forms. Its mosaic stained-glass windows and murals which decorate the inside are worth seeing, as well as the façade decorated with a mosaic which was inaugurated on the 22-10-97 depicting different scenes from the Old and New Testaments, together with images of Cristo del Sudor and the Virgen de las Nieves.

Iglesia Antigua (the “old” church). Chapel attached to the parish church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, the only example of Mudejar Gothic architecture in the Valencia region. The walls of the surrounding buildings support it. It combined religious and defensive functions with its defensive bastion. This primitive 14th century fortress was rebuilt and today houses the vestry and the base of the bell tower. Inside there is an 15th century altarpiece with representations of San Antonio Abad, San Cosme and San Damián, which is of great artistic and historical value and attributed to a apprentice of Juan Reixach.
